Healthy relationships are not as easy as we wish to be! To have a healthy relationship with another human, first, we need to have a healthy relationship with ourselves.
Our significant one is just a perfect mirror that shows us what we need to improve, correct, address, or respect in ourselves to be more authentic and healthier.
Why a healthy relationship can seem to be complicated
Relationships can lead us to see things in ourselves that we may not want to see, change, or heal. So, to avoid this, we may sabotage the relationship or even leave it on purpose because of our fears.
There are many tips or indications that we may consider or learn to be able to create a healthy relationship with another person. Even so, all this will only have good results if you have already worked on yourself first, understanding your patterns and habits and developing effective relationship-building skills.
How can I have a healthy relationship with someone?
Although every person is different and there isn’t a recipe to make our close connections last, we can try to behave in healthy ways to relate to others respectfully and consciously:
-
Communicate: Communication is key to understanding each other and having a healthy relationship. Communicate openly, honestly, and respectfully. Don’t criticize, blame, or make assumptions about the other person’s thoughts or feelings.
-
Trust your partner: Be reliable and keep your promises to generate trust. Always give them the benefit of the doubt instead of accusing or getting mad.
-
Show Appreciation: Recognize your partner’s positive qualities and actions. Express gratitude and acknowledge each other’s efforts to maintain a healthy relationship.
-
Compromise: Work together to resolve conflicts as a team. Learn to be flexible and willing to make concessions for the sake of the relationship.
-
Make time for Intimacy: Physical and emotional intimacy is very important. Be open to exploring new ways to connect with your partner.
-
Be Honest: Avoid lying, hiding things, or being deceitful. Prioritize honesty and truthfulness.
-
Practice interdependence: Set healthy boundaries and respect each other’s space and time. It’s important to have some independence and maintain separate interests and hobbies. Interdependence is a good way to sustain a healthy relationship.

More about having a healthy relationship
Now you know some tips to work on if you are dating someone new or already are in a relationship. But, as we mentioned, there is a lot to work on yourself first for the relationship to work.
Here are some ideas you can check with yourself before starting to work with all of the above:
-
Do I know myself? A Healthy relationship requires authenticity, so if we are not proud of who we are, want to hide it, or don’t accept it, we will only meet people who will mirror this. Learn to know who you are and love yourself completely!
-
Do I know what I want and expect in a relationship? Relationships are about compatibility. If we don’t know what we want and expect from it, we will just be a match for people who feel the same way and they will never be sure of the relationship either.
You can ask yourself these questions:
- Do I want an open relationship? A casual and fun relationship? A committed and sincere relationship? All of these things? Neither? Work on this so you will know easier when to say goodbye.
-
Which values are important to me? To know if we are compatible with someone we need to have our values established and firm. Although this can change during our lives, is important to know if the person we want to share with is alike or not.
Healthy relationships are not easy, they require commitment and effort every day. However, as we already know, they can bring much joy to our lives and it’s worth doing it!
