What does Inner Work mean?
Inner work is the first step towards living an authentic and purposeful life, as it leads us to eliminate fears, blockages, and beliefs that do not belong to us, encouraging us to explore our full potential.
It involves a process of self-exploration, self-reflection, and working with our thoughts, emotions, beliefs, values, and patterns of behavior to gain insights, heal past wounds, and achieve personal growth and real happiness. Sounds easy and simple, but how come not everyone is doing it?
In our current culture, looking inward is not highly promoted, which is why we often tend to avoid our inner work. However, many times circumstances force us to do so, and that’s when we begin to understand that we cannot truly enjoy anything external without achieving internal well-being – physical, mental, emotional, and psychological. In other words, holistic well-being.
How do you heal and do Inner Work?
When we talk about “healing” we mean being able to repair and recover from emotional, psychological, or spiritual wounds or imbalances.
It involves addressing and alleviating pain, suffering, or dysfunction to promote a state of wholeness, well-being, and restoration.
To do this, we can turn to Inner work and its different forms of doing it, which include introspection, self-inquiry, meditation, journaling, therapy, and engaging in practices that promote self-awareness and self-discovery.
To be able to heal, we need to better understand ourselves, address any emotional or psychological challenges, explore our fears, insecurities, limiting beliefs, and past traumas to heal emotional wounds and develop healthier coping mechanisms, and ultimately live a more authentic, fulfilling life.
And all these activities may take time and effort, but it’s completely worth it!
How do I start my inner work?
Looking within can be challenging, and at the same time, we can feel unfamiliar with it without knowing how to begin.
Here are some steps to help you start with your inner work:
1- Give yourself some alone time:
Being constantly busy is the antithesis of personal work. It is ideal to give yourself moments where you can reconnect in silence with yourself. Learn to spend time alone, do not be afraid.
This way, you will uncover fears, insecurities, and limiting beliefs, but also desires, passions, talents, and strengths that you were not aware of!
2- Commit yourself
Set the intention that you want to embark on your inner work journey. This can’t be done in a day or two. It requieres dedication.
Set goals and understand your aspirations. This will provide you with a sense of purpose and you will feel more committed.
3- Create an “inner work environment”
Find a quiet and comfortable space where you can engage in self-reflection without distractions.
This could be a designated area in your home or a peaceful outdoor setting. Always use this space to take the time to do your inner work.
4- Challenge your beliefs and values
What are your core beliefs and values? Are they aligned with who you truly are and with whom you want to become?
Examine your beliefs and identify areas where you need change and transformation because they resonate with you anymore.
5- Learn to be self-aware
Becoming more self-aware is a valuable process that involves developing a deeper understanding of oneself, including thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and patterns.
Observe your thoughts and reactions throughout the day. Meditation can be a valuable tool to develop present-moment awareness and live in the present moment.
6- Reflect on your experiences
Gain insights into your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors by journaling or by introspective writing. Discover more of your inner world by asking yourself Deep and meaningful questions and searching for some answers.
7- Seek guidance
Seek support and guidance and try working with a therapist or coach who specializes in personal development. This is a very important step! Since they will provide you with tools, and strategies as you discover your inner work journey and make the path easier.
8- Embrace self-love and acceptance
Be kind to yourself throughout the process and practice self-love and self-care. Looking inside can be challenging, so treat yourself with care and patience while you are growing and blooming.
How do I actívate my inner strength?
Engaging in inner work means being willing to confront and explore challenging aspects of oneself. It is a transformative journey that can empower you to make positive changes, develop greater self-compassion, and live a more authentic and meaningful life, but it also requires inner strength and courage to climb each step of the way.
